A two-acre memorial site on the banks of the Brazos River has been allocated to the Doris Miller Memorial project by the City of Waco.
Objective:  To create a memorial to honor Doris Miller to include a place for remembrance, reflection and learning.

DORIS MILLER MEMORIAL

Goals:The design and implementation of this project will address five goals: excellence, education, accountability, sustainability and respect.
Excellence: Provide a community arts project that adheres to the highest standards of practice, materials and design while supporting the development and sustenance of high standards and principals in the community.

 
Education: The use of public art and visual images to bring an important historical event to life: to educate current and future generations as to the exemplary conduct displayed by this outstanding American. Target Population: All citizens of Waco, the State of Texas, and the United States, as well as people from other nations with an interest in African American history, naval history, World War II and the visual arts.

 
Accountability: Honoring the history and leadership of the communities within Waco that we serve; working with clarity of intention, communication and follow-through; and committing to community ownership of the processes and products of the collaboration.

 
Sustainability: Assuring that there is sustainable benefit to the community and that the resources needed to sustain the Doris Miller Memorial and the surrounding park are provided.

 
Respect: Understanding the interdependence of the diverse communities that comprise Waco; showing respect for these communities, both outwardly and inwardly; and bringing them together through the design process.
